| Caroline Richards - Nature's Beauty - April 2006
From a young age Caroline has been painting and drawing items that interest her such as flora and fauna. This theme extended through her GCSEs and A Levels where she continued furthering her skills in art and design in a realistic style of working. Her art then took a back seat while she studied for a science degree at Nottingham University, however this break from painting just furthered her enthusiasm and after completing her degree Caroline went back to college to study for a Foundation Art diploma. This course enabled her to experiment much more with abstract ideas and try out various new materials. Caroline began to link her scientific background into her artwork by concentrating on medical images and looking at chance and mutations in cells and organisms. She began to incorporate elements of chance into her paintings by the use of both materials and subject and now the process of a piece of work is often more important than the finished item.
Much of Caroline's work includes the use of acrylic inks and crackle media which are applied by hand eliminating the use of traditional brushes and drawing implements. This combination helps to remove some of the control found in traditional paintings. Caroline also includes natural products such as shells and pearls to give a third dimension to her pieces. Using a combination of these methods Caroline is able to incorporate some of the unpredictability found in natre.
Caroline's paintings are now created in her spare time. She is currently working full time as a Zoo Keeper and is surrounded with colours and patterns of nature on a daily basis. However she still likes to focus on the unusual and unnoticed. Much of Caroline's work can be described as bold abstrat paintings which have a contemporary feel about them. She would like to believe that they are both aesthetically pleasing but will also make people stop and think. When people see her work she would like it to make them think about their surroundings more and take notice of the beauty in things that we pass by every day.
