In and around Herefordshire is a delight. The countryside changes between
the mountains and valleys of the Black Mountains and Malvern Hills and
between May Hill and Ludlow. Through her paintings and cards, Barbara
has tried to record some aspects of the scenery, the farming (Hereford
Cattle, Hop Picking and Sheep farming) and some buildings and Cathedrals
of the Three Counties.
Barbara has a lifelong interest in art and design having studied at Brighton
College of Art in 1963 and at Leeds College of Art and Design for a further
three years. She graduated with a Diploma in Furniture Design and spent
a few years with Design Workshop in Yorkshire and then the Architects
Department in the London Borough of Hounslow.
Family intervened and Barbara maintained her interest in art at home
developing watercolour and mixed media techniques. A further course at
Hereford College of Art studying painting developed and broadened her
interests. The earliest work shown here, Tomatoes, is from that time.
As a furniture designer Barbara was used to working in pencil and the
four pencil drawings are early works. Colour was added as in the Ironbridge
Reflections and in the small Hereford Cathedral through Victoria Bridge
but drawing was the basis of many works. She now work mainly in watercolour
and the pencil marks are of less importance.
Several of the originals of the card designs are shown and the main part
of the gallery has a permanent display of the pictures, cards, prints
and mats.
Barbara takes great pleasure from the countryside and enjoy visiting
and painting local scenes and country houses. Membership of the Hereford
Painting Club has enabled her privileged access to many private estates.
A few early commissions painting country scenes and farm houses with
other sales encouraged Barbara to start entering paintings in local and
regional exhibitions. To date these have included exhibiting in the Shire
hall in Hereford during the Three Choirs Festival in the City, at the
Royal West of England Academy, Summer Exhibition at Bristol, in the Post
Graduate Medical Centre, Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, in Ludlow
and other galleries mainly around Herefordshire.
Barbara has regularly exhibited her work at The Old Mayor's Parlour in
Hereford and in the last few years has been with The Malvern Artists and
currently with The Malvern Hills Gallery in Malvern and The Guild of Herefordshire
Craftsmen.
